How to Double Knit A Shamrock Hot Pad

Double Knitting Project for Beginners

Let’s get ready to knit for St. Patrick’s Day! This post highlights a beginner shamrock themed hot pad that you can make in under 5 hours,

Two color double knitting is worked with two different colored, separate skeins of yarn simultaneously. We work the front facing color as a knit stitch and the back facing color as a purl stitch. This magically creates a double-sided stockinette stitch fabric.

When casting on stitches, the best cast on method is the long tailed cast-on, alternating each color across the row.

Materials:
Red Heart Super Saver: White, Hunter Green
Knitting Needles US Size 8
Scissors
Large Eyed Yarn Needle

When double knitting, each stitch consists of two colors, meaning one stitch is the green and the white loop together. When you cast on alternating white and green stitches , you will have 46 loops on the needle, 23 green and 23 white. The ‘stitch’ is one white and one green loop together, equaling 23 stitches total.

Notes/Pattern:

Long tail cast on 23 stitches, 46 loops, one green loop and one white loop counting as one stitch.
The first stitch of each row, 1 green and 1 white loop, is slipped purl wise.
The final stitch of each row, 1 green and 1 white loop, is purled together as one stitch.
Odd numbered rows are always read from right to left. Even numbered rows are always read from left to right.
Odd numbered rows will have the ‘right’ side visible with a green shamrock and a white background.
Even numbered rows will have the ‘wrong’ side visible, with a white shamrock and a green background. There is not really a ‘wrong’ side in double knitting since both sides are stockinette but the colors will be opposite of each other on each side.
