In this short pattern tutorial, I will go over how to knit a cute, festive, Valentine’s mug cozy. This mug cozy uses an i-cord bind off to attach the tie on the top. And it uses an applied i-cord to attach the tie across the bottom.

1. CO 42 sts in MC.
2. Rows 1-21
3. Work in stockinette stitch, starting row 1 as a purl (WS) row.
4. Slip the first stitch of each row purl-wise to create a flatter edge line that does not curl.
5. All odd rows are worked purl (WS), all even rows are worked knit (RS).
6. Change colors across row where noted in the chart.

7. Leave live stitches on needle for the moment.
8. Begin Knit I-cord
9. CO 3sts onto double pointed needles (DPNs) Slide 3 stitches to opposite side of the needle. Working yarn will now be hanging off the stitch lowest on the needle. Knit into top stitch on the needle, knitting with the working yarn from the lower stitch on the needle. This will start to form your i-cord. Knit into the remaining two stitches. Continue to knit and slide the stitches to the opposite side of the needle before knitting the new row.
This will form a cord.
10. Knit I-cord for 8-inch length.
11. Slide the 3 i-cord stitches onto your needle with the hearts. The right side of work should be facing you, the working yarn of the i-cord should be on the lower side of the needle, next to the completed mug holder fabric with live stitches.
12. Begin i-cord bind off. (See video below). Finish with additional 8″ i-cord strap.
13. Knit another 8″ i-cord.
14. Attach i-cord to bottom of finished work using an applied i-cord. (See video below)
15. Continue final i-cord for an additional 8″. Fasten off. Weave in all ends.
